Appearance and Personality: Sora is a bubbly, friendly, eager fifteen-year-old with shocking blue eyes and brown hair that looks like he’s stuck his finger in a light socket too many times. While prone to mischief, Sora does have a strong sense of justice developed over the course of the game as he protected world after world from being invaded by Heartless and Nobodies, and immediately jumped to the aid of anyone who he thought needed help. Sora makes friends with nearly everyone that he meets and wins people over with his bright smile, good out look on life, and a sense of innocence about him; he even gets the sober Cloud and Leon (Squall) to crack smiles. In the game, even when things were crashing down around him, Sora always looked on the bright side with an unwavering idealism that things would work out all right no matter what. Sora doesn’t always catch on to anything subtle. It took him the length of the game to discover that the reason the Organization was calling him ‘Roxas’ was because that was his nobody; even then, Riku had to point it out to him. He’s on the naïve side and unless warned, he has a tendency to take things at face value, trust people more than he should, and doesn’t think before he speaks.
Background: Kingdom Hearts is a series of three games that follow the adventures of a young boy named Sora through a colorful array of worlds filled with familiar characters, a vast array of villains and plot holes big enough to drive a truck through.
The beginning introduces Sora and his friends, Riku and Kairi, who live on the Destiny Islands . Their island was attacked by creatures called Heartless that destroyed their world and flung the friends into space. Sora woke up in a place called Traverse Town that was made up of people who had been displaced when their worlds were destroyed. As it turns out, Heartless had been destroying worlds all over the place; weeding their way into the ‘hearts’ of the worlds, destroying them and moving on to the next heart with nothing to stop them except for one thing: the Keyblade.
Yes, I said Keyblade; a giant oversized key that destroys heartless, seals worlds from Darkness and can only be wielded by someone with a pure heart. Can you guess who the key went to? If you can’t, then you aren’t paying attention.
Meeting up with Donald Duck and Goofy, who were sent to help the bearer of the Keyblade, Sora traveled through the various worlds, defending them from the myriad of Disney villains, heartless, various other baddies. Sora turned briefly into a heartless, fought Riku who was possessed by the main villain of the game Ansem, and protected the princesses of heart (including his friend Kairi) from having their hearts used to open up the Kingdom Hearts; the door to the heart of all worlds which would have let heartless run loose, destroying everything, including the worlds Sora had already spent the past 40 hours of game play sealing! Silly villains and their plans to destroy the world, don’t they see that they’d be destroyed too?
After defeating Ansem - the fight was that quick and dull, IMO-. Sora, Donald and Goofy returned the princesses home, closed the door to Kingdom Hearts and restored the destroyed worlds; locking the door with the help of a sane Riku and Mickey, who were trapped in the world of Darkness. Suck
In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories –the ‘optional’ side story-, while searching for a way to save Mickey and Riku from the world of Darkness, members of a group called Organization XIII try to take control of Sora and the Keyblade. Reason why? Not given at all! They figure that you’ll be too distracted by the obnoxious card battle system to notice. Using the powers of a strange girl called Naminé, Marluxia wiped Sora’s memories making him think that it was Naminé he cared about, not Kairi. Fighting between the real and fake memories, Sora defeated Marluxia and saved Naminé, but in the processes of restoring his memories forgot everything that happened. Anyone feel gypped? I know I did.
It took a year to have Sora’s memories restored and before the process could be completed Sora had to be joined back with his nobody, Roxas. What’s a Nobody you ask? Good question! A Nobody is the body and soul left behind when a person gets turned into a heartless that attack anyone with a heart. So what makes them different from heartless? They’re intelligent, like sharks with brains!!
With memories restored, Sora immediately set off on another quest through the worlds to find Mickey and Riku and the true purpose of a group of Nobodies calling themselves Organization XIII -Yes, we’ve heard of them before, they’re just short six or so members-.
Now we get to the ‘fun’.
The leader of Organization XII is a Nobody by the named of Xemnas, the Nobody of Ansem our friend from game one. But wait! It gets better! It turns out that Ansem is not the real Ansem but really, Xehanort, his assistant. Confused? Good! Taking a card from Marluxia’s book, Xemnas ordered his minions to kidnap Kairi and coerce Sora into working for them. He wanted Sora destroying as many heartless as he could, the more hearts he freed, the more that went to the Organization’s headquarters where they were building their own Kingdom Hearts in hopes of restoring the hearts that they lost.
At the Organization’s headquarters it was fight after fight with some villainous expository thrown in for fun. Riku decided to leave Emoville and saved Kairi the real Ansem showed up, and King Mickey kicked some ass. It’s all good. All together they defeated the remaining members of the Organization and stopped Xemnas from forming his Kingdom Hearts and escape while Sora and Riku defeat Xemnas on their own. Only problem, when the portal out of the headquarters closed, Riku and Sora were trapped in the world of Darkness. Looks pretty grim and all, but though the magic of Disney and a random bottle the Kairi set adrift in the beginning of the game, the boys were able to return home.
